For anyone who's ever mentioned Ray's nest in a story... or for anyone who's ever wondered just what he has laying around... here's a room-by-room exploration of the pad. Muchas gracias to Tam for compiling this description!
To be updated as necessary. Any additions, please send them to serge@internetdump.com.
Now, these are just my observations -- I'd say I was 95% certain about the details as I could see them, but I am quite open to discuss if anyone else sees something better or differently. Together, we WILL figure out what all this shit is! :)
I will be updating this as I can (like after "Strange Bedfellows" and "The Ladies Man") but for now, here is a diagram of Ray's apartment, and the things you can find in it. For the sake of argument, I am going to say that you enter his place through a SOUTH door (due South -- get it? < G >), and as you enter, you're facing North. Get paper and pencil and draw along if it helps...cuz here we go.
The Foyer:
Entering through the South door, to the immediate left (west) is a louvered,
accordian-style door to a coat closet. Just past this (along the west wall)
is a dart board. About a foot in and to the right (east) is the
doorway/entrance to the kitchen. Straight ahead (north) opens onto the
living room. There is a single globe light suspended from the ceiling over
this area.
The Kitchen:
Turning to face East, enter the kitchen. To the immediate right (south wall)
is the refrigerator with upper freezer, goldenrod color; on the freezer door
is a large paper shamrock. Facing south and toward the refrigerator, move to
the left (east); countertop space has toaster oven, on top of which are a set
of flour/sugar/tea/coffee canisters, bottom green, lids yellow, all
cylindrical. Also some spice bottles.
To the left of the toaster oven is the sink. To the left of the sink is more counterspace, then the stove/rangetop with oven unit overhead. Above the sink are cupboards/cabinets with no doors, 4 shelves high, containing dishes (white with black-and-white spots in the holstein "cow" pattern). In the sink there is a large metal pot, and a plate with a green and goldenrod geometric border. Behind the sink against the wall is either a large tray or a splashguard decorated in green ferns and two red and blue macaws. Below the sink and countertop are more cabinets. The cabinets are all painted a moss green.
Turn around to face north again (your back to the sink). Before you is a counter with cupboard and drawer space beneath. This counter is slightly lower than the breakfast bar (which opens onto the living room). There are white louvered accordian-style doors, so one can hide the dirty kitchen and all those piled-up dishes from view of the living room, if need be. < G > On the extreme left (west) end of the counter is (what appears to be) a black auto-drip coffee maker. Beside this, laying on its side, is a roll of paper towel. In the center, there is a cheese grater. There are various spice bottles around the counter; in "Eclipse," there is a book, propped up and open, standing on the right, and there is a cereal bowl in front of the book. On the small section of wall (a west wall; this makes up the right side of the doorway leading to the foyer) hangs a "salt box" (very popular in the 60's, long back with small box compartment at bottom, used for planters or to hold notes, etc).
The Bar:
Above the bar hangs a long, rectangular stained-glass swag lamp, the kind
normally seen over pool tables. On the bar (if you're looking at it from the
kitchen side), there are two placemats with writing on them (I can't make out
the words, only a few letters); the one on the left is beige, the one on the
right and under the telephone/ answering machine is red. They do not say the
same things. To the far right (east) end of the bar is a large Mexican/Santa
Fe-style flower pot containing a cactus (tall). A string of chili pepper
lights frames the opening from the bar into the kitchen.
The bar itself has a brown "leather" padded rim, about 6" wide, and four stools (upholstered in a similar "leather") stand beneath the overhang. If you sit at the bar on a stool, you are facing south into the kitchen. To the right (west) is something that LOOKS like an old radio; haven't been able to make it out that well.
The Living Room:
Coming in from the foyer, the living room opens to the north and east. Along
the west wall (same wall with the foyer closet) is a big wood cabinet with
glass doors; possibly an old rifle or trophy case. It stands about 5' high.
Above it is some strange V-shaped art object...almost looks like bird wings,
can't be sure at this time. Just past this and in the northwest corner of
the room is a brown leather chair set at a diagonal to face south and east
into the room. If you sat in the chair, there would be a floor lamp with
off-white shade to your immediate left (northwest corner).
Along the north wall is a large set of bookshelves containing books,
videotapes, cassettes, CDs, and on the lowest shelf, record albums. It also
seems to be where his stereo is set up. Just past this is a black and tan
steamer trunk on its side; the television stands on top of the trunk. About
two or three feet from the shelves and trunk/tv setup is the wood coffee
table (I do know in TLM that there is a carved and painted wood turtle on the
table < G >). On the floor between the table and the shelves/tv is a large
Native American-print area rug, mostly red, with beige and turquoise (I'm
assuming). Under the rug are Ray's dance-step instructions.
On the opposite side of the table from the tv is a large, light gray sofa.
The sofa faces north. If you sit on the sofa, on your right/the east end is
an end table with a lamp that has a shade that looks like it is made up of
balsa wood slats. Kitty-corner to the lamp is a heavy, deep-red armchair
with some floral pattern in the weave of the upholstery (it's all the same
color, tho). The chair faces into the room at an angle, northwest.
Facing north and to the tv, behind the tv is a large "photo" of a beach at
sunset, large palm trees silhouted against a melon-pink sky. This takes up a
fairly big section of the wall.
To the immediate right/east of the tv is another floor lamp (the one with the
underwear draped over the shade, in "Spy vs. Spy" < G >), and then the doorway
to Ray's bedroom. Please note -- this is actually a DOUBLE set of doors, but
he keeps one shut (presumably) to make the entry to his bedroom "normal"
sized. The closed door is past the opening; on it hangs a poster/print that
looks like something off an Egyptian urn, heiroglyphic-style art/black
figures. (Will try to get a better look at this in another ep.)
At the door, do a right-face and look to the east. Before you, next to the
closed door, is a wood roll-top desk. Behind the desk is the first of
several windows lining this wall. On the top of the desk stands a small
white box fan To the immediate left (north) of the fan is a toy car,
possibly a Chicago PD car, possibly a white or light blue GTO (didn't get
enough of a look). To the right (your right, as you are looking at it) of
the fan are two small (5x7") framed photos: the one closest the fan is a man
(Ray?) in a graduation cap and gown. The picture next to this is of a man in
a tux and a woman with an off-the-shoulder gown, facing each other as though
dancing or hugging. The woman's hair appears to be curly and slightly darker
(reddish?). Questionable if this is Stan and Stella on their wedding day, or
during their dancing days, or if it's actually Ma and Pa Kowalski, when they
were younger. On the writing surface of the desk is an old desk lamp (right
hand side), and lots of papers. There also appears to be another cactus here
near the desk.
Moving right/south from the desk is another window (the pattern is like this:
W W W W W W W W). An air conditioner unit is set in the second window.
In front of/below the next window is a white, old fashioned steam radiator.
In the wall space (narrow) between the first and second set of double-windows
is something that looks like a cross but with something hanging in front of
it/over the lower half of it; a hat? coat of arms? Hard to tell. There is a
red kitchen chair -- looks like it COULD be wooden -- under the next window.
Moving past the second set of windows, on a larger space of wall hangs a
white (?) mountain bike (or is it a 10-speed? I'm going by the tires, so I
say it's a mountain bike). In front of the next window is a teak credenza,
on top of which stands (ta daa!) the aquarium containing Ray's Turtle. The
next set of windows are directly across the dining room from the kitchen
doorway. On the next section of wall is a clock with a pink ring of neon
around the face. There are two small framed pictures on the wall beneath the
clock (could not tell what they are). At the final window is the southeast
corner; right-face again. This southeast corner becomes....
The Dining Room:
In the center of this area is a 50's style kitchen table with a mottled, cool
gray surface, rimmed in chrome, and with four chairs with red upholstery and
chrome supports. Above the table is a suspended "chandelier" consisting of
three globes, very simple but modern. Under the table appears to be another
throw rug, possibly in earth tones (beiges). BTW, the floors are all
hardwood (altho I haven't seen the kitchen floor to tell if it's linoleum).
As you move along the south wall you will run into the west wall and the
doorway into the kitchen (entering here, the stove is on your immediate left,
the counter/bar to your right).
The windows along the east wall all have vertical miniblinds, and a set of
white inner sheers and red (burgundy?) sheers over them. Red and white --
the colors of Poland. Clever set department.... < G >
And now...The Bedroom:
We hit the northeast corner fairly quickly (it's not a large room). Turning
left (facing the north wall) and moving west (to our left) we soon encounter
a nightstand atop which squats a fat round lamp with shade (at least, that's
what I *think* it is < G >).
Directly beside this is THE BED. Double-sized (at least), with a box-style
headboard (the kind with the shelves inset, where you can store books for
bedtime reading...among other things < VEG >). Teak wood (a style popular in
the 50's/60's, which seems to be the overall flavor of Ray's decor). Above
the headboard and on the north wall hangs a large sign reading "We give Lucky
Green Stamps" with a big clover on it. Appears to have dark blue or green
covers on the bed, but there's a pillow with a white case on it in plain
view...so it's a little nutty.
Unable to tell what lies in the western half of the bedroom, but I am
assuming this is where the bathroom is located (only logical!).
The south wall of the bedroom, when you face it, is where we find Ray's
dresser, which has a large mirror over it. Again, I am assuming this is its
position, as in "Eclipse" we see him preparing to leave the house and the
"Lucky Green Stamps" sign is in plain view behind him (thus we see him from
the mirror's perspective). I am guessing, from his position, that the
dresser is to the right (west) of the door, as he's facing it.
And that's all for now....
Or go back to the Serge main page....
On the south wall and close to the southeast corner is a red and white barber
pole (a pole for a Pole? what, did he swipe it from the guy who gave him that
haircut? ba-dum-cha! thank you, folks -- I'm here all week....). To the
right/west of the pole is an oak-finish hutch and bureau, mission-style from
the looks of it. Various pottery and chatchkis (sp?) in the cubbyholes.
Above the hutch is a large framed picture... couldn't tell what of.
From what I can tell, when you enter the door from the south and walk in
(north), to your immediate right/east is a white armchair which sits at a
slight angle facing northwest. Behind this appears to be a brass (and
glass?) bookshelf, tall and curving at the top. Not sure about this, but
that's what it looks like. To the left of the shelf-thing is a window. The
curtains appear to be beige.
