Miscellaneous #2:- Balloon Clean Your Microwave- B= 100; S= 0

How to have some fun while doing a messy job. <Ret. to Miscellaneous Index>

Here is a fun way for 'looners to clean their microwave. You know what a grungy mess the interior of the cooking chamber becomes after a period of use. Well give this a try.

Take a 10 to 12" round balloon and squirt some liquid dish washing soap in it. Stick the neck on the kitchen faucet and fill the balloon until the rubber starts to stretch. Make sure it's filled with liquid, not air. Tie a half knot in the balloon neck (just push the beaded end halfway through) in case additional water must be added. Shake the balloon to thoroughly mix the soap and added water. Remove any shelves in the microwave cooking chamber and place the balloon in the center of the bottom. Set the power range for high, the time for 5 minutes, and hit the "START" button.

The microwave energy will quickly bring the water in the balloon to a boil which will cause the balloon to inflate with saturated soapy steam. If you saw the movie "Gremlins", you know what happens next.

When the balloon bursts, open the door and scrub out the interior of the cooking chamber with a Brillo ® pad or equivalent. You should find the interior surfaces are covered with a hot soapy film which should make the clean up less of a drudgery.

NOTE: if the balloon inflates but doesn't burst, turn off the power and allow the balloon to deflate. You will have to untie it and add some additional water.

WARNING: Do not immediately handle the balloon with bare hands. The water inside is HOT and still near the boiling point. Use a glove or hot pad.
