Here is a summary of the results of the first 134 responses, which were made between April and 31 December 2000. The first response appeared within 4 hours of the survey first appearing on the WWW.
More respondents were male (79) than female (55) (Figure 1).
Figure 1

Most of the respondents (60%) were under 29 years of age (Figure 2). Obviously more people of this age are either more interested in farting, or less reticent about talking about it.
Figure 2

Most respondents irrespective of sex farted with a frequency averaging 15 per day, which is the standard figure for males (Figure 3). It is clear that the standard figure for females of 9 farts per day, determined a few years ago, is an underestimate and that both sexes fart to about the same extent. People seem fairly accurate at guessing the number of times they let fly, though the data at the upper and lower extremes of Figure 3 are obviously unreliable.
Figure 3

62% of respondents farted first thing in the morning and 58% in bed. These seemed to be the most popular times for anal emission of gas.
More men than women claimed to let noisy farts (Figure 5), but more women admitted to smelly farts (Figure 4). No men admitted to inaudible farts that had no smell!
Figure 4

Figure 5

48% percent of respondents (Figure 6) said that their farts were always smelly, while only 5% said that their farts were never smelly.
Figure 6

Nearly half the respondents said they enjoyed it when they heard someone farting, and only 16% said that they were embarrassed (Figure 7).
Figure 7

Most respondents were not shy about farting. Only 19% said they only farted if alone (Figure 8). Indeed 40% of respondents claimed that they would fart anywhere if they needed to.
Figure 8

The 2000 data for this was inadequate, but a new question on nationality has been included in the 2001 survey, and it should then be possible to obtain information about cultural differences over farting habits.
The word fart is generally regarded as rather impolite. Whether this is because it is impolite to fart, or whether it is impolite to talk about it, I do not know. Most of the respondents had no inhibitions about using the word (just as most of them had no or few inhibitions about farting). Only 13% of respondents avoided using the word fart to describe letting gas out of their anus.
Those are the most interesting results so far. This page will be updated regulary, so if you are interested in farting, please check back here regularly to see what new facts have come out of the survey.
